NEW DELHI – National badminton ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei was the most sought after player in the auction for the prestigious Indian Premier Badminton League.
Hyderabad Hunters secured Chong Wei’s services with USD100,000 (about RM420,000) price tag with the preliminary rounds in Mumbai held from Jan 2 and grand final on Jan 17 in New Delhi.
India’s Saina Nehwal, the world No.2 will be playing for Awadh Warriors of Lucknow after the franchiser paid USD100,000 (about RM420,000) for her.
Badminton Association of India (BAI) organised the league after holding the inaugural tournament in 2013 which attracted top players of the world.
The PBL 2016 will feature six franchises and each franchise will host a two-day leg.
The teams were Delhi Acers, Hyderbad Hunters, Mumbai Rockets, Awadhe Warriors, Bengaluru Topguns and Chennai Smashers.
Other than Chong Wei, two Malaysian pairs will be taking part in the two-week tournament.
Lim Khim Wah and Hoon Thien How will be playing for Bengaluru Topguns where both will receive about USD15,000 (about RM63,000) each.
Meanwhile, Koo Keat Kien and Tan Bonn Heong pair will be playing for Hyderabad Hunters where Koo is paid USD36,000 (about RM151,200), while Tan USD30,000 (about RM126,000).- BERNAMA
