KUALA LUMPUR – Host and defending champion China started their title defence in style by sweeping aside Germany 5-0 in a Group 1A Sudirman Cup match in Dongguan, China on Sunday.
China’s mixed doubles pair Ma Jin/Xu Chen beat Michael Fuchs/Birgit Michels 21-16, 22-20 to give China their first point before Lin Dan made it 2-0 by beating Marc Zwiebler 21-11, 21-11.
The Chinese were awarded the third and winning point when Germany’s men’s doubles pair Michael Fuchs/Johannes Schoettler withdrew due to injury before facing Chai Biao/Hong Wei.
Li Xuerui made it 4-0 by beating Karin Schnaase 21-17, 21-8 while Tang Yuanting/Yu Yang completed the rout with an easy 21-14, 21-14 win over Isabel Herttrich/Birgit Michels.
China face Thailand in their next group match on Tuesday.
In a Group 1B match, Japan scored a convincing 4-1 victory over Russia with Akane Yamaguchi setting the path to victory by beating Natalia Perminova 21-15, 21-16 after Japan’s men’s doubles pair Hiroyuki Endo/Kenichi Hayakawa had lost to Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Sozonov 19-21, 12-21.
Kento Momota tilted the tie in Japan’s favour by beating Vladimir Malkov 21-15, 21-9 in the men’s singles before Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi clinched the winning point by beating Russia’s women’s doubles pair Ekaterina Bolotova/Evgeniya Kosetskaya 21-9, 21-10.
Mixed doubles pair Kenta Kazuno/Ayane Kurihara made it 4-1 after facing strong resistance from Evgenia Dimova/Evgenij Dremin before triumphing 21-16, 9-21, 21-13 in three sets.
