KUALA LUMPUR – The introduction of a new category for celebrities is expected to boost the image of the Towerthon Menara Kuala Lumpur scheduled on May 14 .
Menara KL chief executive officer Meor Shahril Anuar Ahmad Rathuan said the category would be open to all celebrities to test their physical and mental strength by climbing the 2,508 steps of the staircase in order to conquer the Menara KL.
Meor Shahril said 40 celebrities have already registered their participation while more are expected to sign up for the run since the closing date is only on May 5.
“The prestigious event is an annual endurance race hosted by Menara KL as part of efforts to promote the KL Tower to tourists and at the same time offer a competitive event,” he told reporters here today.
Meor Shahril said the Towerthon which offers RM48,500 as prize money will feature nine categories and expected to attract about 5,000 local and foreign participants, including from Germany, Kenya, United States, France and Singapore.
The nine categories contested are Men’s Open (18 and above), men’s junior veteran (40-49), women’s senior veteran (50 and above), women’s open (18 and above), women’s veteran (35 and above), men’s junior (13-17), women’s junior (13-17), disabled (18 and above) and celebrities (18 and above).
Since the first edition in 1998, the best time recorded is 11 minutes 56 seconds in the men’s open category while the best women runner clocked 14:51s.
He said as an added incentive to promote the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games hosted by Malaysia, the best runner in the men’s category and women’s category would receive RM2,000, if they can beat the current record in their respective categories.
The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department will also be organising the ‘Bomba Tower Running’ on May 13 as a support race.
