Capsized Raft Victim Relates Tragedy In Sungai Bekok

BATU PAHAT – A computer technician whose mother, younger brother and two nephews drowned when a raft carrying 10 family members overturned in Sungai Bekok, Yong Peng yesterday, described the tragedy as chaotic.

Ali Abdul Raman Hairraddin, 28, who was one of those who survived the 3pm incident said soon after the raft overturned, it rammed into some of the family members.

In the melee, he said he managed to rescue his father, Hairaddin Masran, 58, and his (Ali Abdul Raman’s) wife, Junaidah Yang, 28, before shouting for help.

“Before we were on the raft, the water appeared tranquil but the winds were strong.

“When we were in the middle of the river, our raft suddenly overturned. After the raft overturned and rammed into us, we were separated and some of my family members drowned,” he told reporters at the scene here today.

Ali Abdul Raman, who works at a government department in Putrajaya lamented he did not expect a tragedy to occur during his vacation at his village in Kangkar Bahru.

He lost his mother, Lana Ismail, 55, younger brother, Mohd Aiman Arif, 10, and nephews, Muhammad Iman Naqiudin Nas Izaha, two, and Muhammad Ikhwan Nasaruddin Nas Izaha, 10 months.

Ali Abdul Raman said, prior to the incident, all of them had planned to visit his father, Hairaddin’s goat farm which was set up about two months ago on the other side of the river.

He added they had also attended a wedding ceremony in the area and performed Zohor prayers at the nearest mosque before the tragedy.

“My father and my late mother had frequently travelled on the raft. However, this was the first time for me,” he said, adding that he was grateful the body of his mother and younger brother were recovered.

The bodies of Ali Abdul Rahman’s nephews were the first to be located by a search and rescue team.

His younger brother’s body was found about 8.40pm in the river about two metres from where the raft had sunk, while the body of his mother was found early today.

The other victims who survived were Ali Abdul Raman’s elder sister, Nor Diana Alisa, 31, his younger sister, Farahida, 26, and his son, Muhamad Ali An-naqi, two. – BERNAMA
