PUTRAJAYA – Cancer can be prevented, and upon early detection, cured as well, says Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.
“The risk factors in cancer are similar to those of other non-communicable diseases, like inactive lifestyle (sedentary), smoking habit, unhealthy eating habit, obesity and alcoholism,” he said.
In a statement issued in conjunction with World Cancer Day, he said every organisation and individual could play their role in the prevention and control of cancer.
In Malaysia, he said, cancer was one of the main causes of death in government and private hospitals nationwide.
Dr Subramaniam said besides taking preventive measures, early detection of cancer was crucial for effective treatment.
He advised the people, especially those from certain age groups to go for cancer screening.
“The screening is available at government and private health facilities,” he said.
The minister also advised the people to adopt a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, eat balanced and healthy food, and for smokers, to kick the habit. – BERNAMA
