KUALA LUMPUR – The call for Christopher Leong to retract his statement on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case or resign as the Malaysian Bar Council president is a clear message given by members of the Bar that he should refrain himself from issuing statement at his whim and fancy as if representing all lawyers in the country.
SukaGuam chairman Datuk Khairul Anwar Rahmat said the Bar Council should uphold justice without fear or favor and not show inclination to support only one party in any trial.
“If the Bar Council leadership insists on testing the patience of a majority of the lawyers, just wait for an uprising of lawyers who are now losing patience with those who have strayed from the actual cause of the formation of the council,” he said in a statement here yesterday.
Khairul, who is chairman of Umno Legal Secretariat, also urged lawyers who were in support of the call to contact SukaGuam secretariat via email at firstname.lastname@example.org for further action.
More than 100 members of the Bar Council today called on Leong to retract his statement questioning the Federal Court’s judgment on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case or resign as president of the Bar Council.
A member of the Bar Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman said Leong must submit a clear and unconditional apology to the judiciary and to all international bodies and entities.
On Feb 10, Anwar lost his final appeal against his conviction and five-year jail sentence after the Federal Court dismissed his appeal.
Anwar is now serving the sentence in Sungai Buloh Prison. – Bernama
