CAIRO – The international donor conference held in Egypt’s capital Cairo raised US$5.4 billion towards construction of the Gaza Strip, Xinhua news agency reported.
Qatar pledged to donate one US$1 billion while both Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates announced to provide US$200 million.
Earlier in the day, US secretary of state John Kerry announced an additional US$212 million in aid to Gaza following a US$118 million of humanitarian aid pledged earlier.
High-level Arab and foreign delegates including the Arab League, United Nations, European Union and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and representatives of world powers attended the conference.
The conference was also held to seek ways to end the seven-year-old blockade imposed on the Strip and for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the two-state solution.
Egypt recently brokered a truce between Palestine and Israel after a 51-day Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip that left more than 2,000 Palestinians dead and a further 11,000 injured. Hamas attacks killed at least 73 Israelis. – Bernama
