KOTA KINABALU: Bunga Suara Dandai, the mother of two Sabah politicians and younger sister to former chief minister and governor Tun Sakaran Dandai, passed away at her home in Semporna on Thursday.

The 85-year-old, whose eight children include Semporna MP Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and Lahad Datu assemblyman Datuk Yusop Apdal, died of old age related illnesses at 6.30am Thursday.

Shafie’s spokesman said that she will be buried at Tanah Perkuburan Pekan Semporna after Asar prayers on Friday afternoon.

He said Shafie, who was in Kuala Lumpur attending the ongoing Parliament session, flew back to Semporna in the morning with his wife to pay his respects to his mother.

Shafie, who was former Umno vice president, left the party last year to lead Sabah-based Parti Warisan Sabah while his brother Yusop remains the Lahad Datu Umno chief.

Sakaran was Sabah Umno’s first chief minister in 1994 and later became Yang di-Pertua Negeri in 1995. His son Datuk Nasir Sakaran, a cousin to Shafie, is also an assemblyman in the politically prominent Semporna family. – The Star
