LARUT – Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin on Saturday warned traders to not take advantage of the government’s decision to revise the 2016 Budget by increasing the price of goods.
He said the ministry had instructed its enforcement officers to step up checks to ensure traders do not engage in profiteering.
“”I do not want traders to take advantage, especially with the approaching Chinese New Year celebration,” he told reporters after opening the Malaysian Cooperative College (MKM) social service programme here today.
Last Jan 8, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, announced that the government would table a revision of the 2016 Budget to make it more realistic to suit the present economic situation.
In tandem with the government’s move to revise the budget, Hamzah suggested the people to adapt their lifestyle to current economic situation, including optimising expenses.
On an allegation that the revision of the 2016 Budget would lead to a higher Goods and Services Tax (GST), Hamzah said it was made merely to confuse the people.
“The matter has never been discussed in the cabinet meeting, and I can assure that the government will not burden the people,” he added. – BERNAMA
