YALA – Two people, including a local security volunteer were injured when a bomb exploded near a school in the turbulent Yala region of southern Thailand today.
The security volunteer, identified as Thavi Lebaeluwong, 43, suffered severe body injuries in the 8am (local time) incident at the Yaha district.
The other victim was a 40-year-old woman.
Yaha police chief Col Thavach Soonthornpoch said two schoolgirls aged nine and 10 were rendered unconscious by the powerful explosion.
He said initial investigations revealed the explosion might have been caused by a bomb weighing between one and two kilogrammes, which had been placed beside an electric pole and activated using radio waves.
Based on intelligence reports gathered by security forces, Thavach said a militant group headed by one ‘Ahamad Tengat’ was behind the bombing.
Today’s bomb blast followed several incidents of violence in the Narathiwat and Pattani regions yesterday, which left three men dead. – BERNAMA
