BATU PAHAT – The body of the last victim, who drowned when the raft she was travelling on with family members overturned at Sungai Bekok, Yong Peng, near Batu Pahat, yesterday afternoon was found early today.
Yong Peng Fire and Rescue Station chief Bakarya Mohd Salleh said, the body of Lana Ismail, 55, was found by firemen and members of the public at 8.15 am.
“Her body was found on the riverbank under the Yong Peng bridge about 150 metres from the scene of the tragedy,” he told reporters at the scene, here today.
Lana’s son, Ali Abdul Raman Hairaddin, 28, who survived in the incident was also present at the location.
Bakarya said 32 members of the fire and rescue department including a scuba team were involved in the search and rescue (SAR) operation since yesterday.
He said the firemen used a surface searching technique to find the victims, while the scuba unit were searching underwater before the SAR operation was adjourned at 2.25 am.
Bakarya said Lana’s remains had been handed over to the police for further action.
In the 3 pm incident yesterday, the raft carrying 10 family members who wanted to look at their goat farm on the other side of the river, overturned midway when it was hit by strong current.
The bodies of two siblings, who were also Lana’s grandchildren, were the first two victims to be found after the incident. They were identified as Muhammad Iman Naqiudin Nas Izhar, 2, and Muhammad Ikhwan Nasaruddin Nas Izhar, 10 months.
The body of Lana’s son, Mohd Aiman Arif Hairaddin, 10, was found in the river about two metres from where the raft had sunk at 8.40pm last night.
Besides Ali Abdul Raman, the other victims who survived were Hairaddin Masran, 58, Nor Diana Alisa Hairaddin, 31, Junaidah Yang, 28, Farahida Hairaddin, 26 and Muhamad Ali An-naqi Abdul Raman, two. – BERNAMA
