KUALA LUMPUR – The question of whether or not Barisan Nasional (BN) will field a candidate to contest in the Chempaka state by-election in Kelantan will be decided by the party top leadership, according to Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
“In the context of Kelantan right now, we have a choice whether to take care of the people or to increase the number of our elected representative.
“Taking care of the people should become the priority, especially when there are thousands of flood victims still facing housing issues,” he told reporters after attending a dinner with the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) delegation here last night.
Ahmad Shabery, who is also Communication and Multimedia Minister, said this in response to the personal opinion of Kelantan Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed that BN need not field a candidate in the Chempaka state by-election.
Mustapa, who is also the Joint Chairman of the Kelantan State Flood Disaster Committee, this was because the focus should be on the post-flood rehabilitation work in the state.
The Chempaka by-election is expected to be called following the death of its assemblyman Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat last Thursday. – Bernama
