PUTRAJAYA – The Barisan Nasional (BN) will announce by Tuesday its stand on the proposed implementation of hudud laws in Kelantan, BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said today.
“The announcement will be made by Prime Minister and BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak tomorrow or the day after. As we all know, hudud laws must be in line with the Federal Constitution.
“I am not saying we are against hudud. A law is a law. For a Muslim, God’s law is law. The one who is ‘playing’ this is the DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR),” he said when asked to state the BN stand on the issue of hudud laws.
Tengku Adnan spoke to reporters after launching a volunteer team under the Communication for Behaviourial Impact (Combi) and a Rukun Tetangga Club here.
On March 18, the Kelantan legislative assembly passed the Syariah Criminal Code II 1993 (Amendment 2015) Bill which applies only to Muslims when it is implemented in the state.
However, the hudud laws can only be implemented in Kelantan after the Dewan Rakyat passes amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 and Article 76A (1) of the Federal Constitution.
Tengku Adnan, who is the federal territories minister, claimed that the hudud issue was a provocation of the DAP and PKR in an attempt to cause confusion and disunity in the BN.
“They think they can break up the BN. The BN is different because we believe in consensus. It is because of this that we convene a special meeting of all the key BN component party leaders to obtain their views on the hudud laws.
“Whatever it is, we have to adhere to the Federal Constitution. The PAS hudud is a political hudud,” he said.
The Combi volunteer teams are established to undertake ‘gotong royong’ (self-help) programmes periodically to destroy the breeding grounds of the Aedes mosquito, carrier of the dengue virus, in residential areas. – BERNAMA
