TUMPAT – Mat Razi Mat Ail retained the Pengkalan Kubor state seat for the Barisan Nasional (BN) with a bigger majority of 2,635 votes in the by-election today.
He raised the majority by 899 votes from the 1,736-vote majority obtained by the previous assemblyman, the late Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar, in the 13th general election held last year.
Mat Razi, 48, secured 9,961 votes to beat Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim, 56, of PAS, who obtained 7,326 votes, and independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary, 47, who managed only 38 votes and lost his deposit.
The results of the by-election were announced by the returning officer, Mohd Sobri Ramli, at the vote-tallying centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato Biji Wangsa here at about 9 pm.
A total of 73 per cent of the 24,039 voters cast their ballots in the by-election.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, BN director for the Pengkalan Kubor by-election Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Umno Information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan were present when the results were announced.
Wan Rosdi and Izat Bukhary were not at the centre.
The by-election was held following the death of Noor Zahidi on Aug 20.
Noor Zahidi had beaten Saharun Ibrahim of PKR and Izat Bukhary in the last general election, held last year.
Mat Razi is a former Tumpat assistant education officer and a Tumpat Umno committee member.
He is referred to as an ‘ustaz’ (religious teacher) because he had founded the Pondok Simpangan religious school here. – BERNAMA
