TUMPAT – The Barisan Nasional’s (BN) candidate for the Pengklan Kubor by-election Mat Razi Mat Ail wants to help youths venture into the agriculture industry if he is elected on Sept 25 (polling day).
The former Tumpat assistant district education officer said this was among his objectives in contesting the by-election because he had full confidence in the backing of the federal government for this if the BN retained the seat.
“More than 40 per cent of the voters in the constituency are youths. They will get special attention but without sidelining the other voters. Trust me on this.
“I will meet as many youths as possible to explain what I intend to do for them,” he said while campaigning in the Telaga Bata pollling district here today.
Mat Razi, 48, said he had always touched based with the youths in the constituency because he had been an active sportsperson before this.
“The by-election has given me greater impetus to get more youths here, both men and women, to see the potential in agriculture,” he added.
In meeting voters in Telaga Bata, he urged them to come out in full force on Sept 25 so that their voices will be heard.
Meanwhile, Umno Youth executive committee member Dr Fathul Bari Mat Jahaya, who accompanied him on the rounds, said PAS was attempting to belittle Mat Razi’s “ustaz” credentials in their campaigning because they were fielding a candidate who is a businessman in the by-election.
“No need to resort to this. Even the BN candidate has never claimed himself to be an ustaz. Because he has opened a religious school the locals view him as an ustaz.
“Artistes-artistes joining PAS are also regarded as ustaz and ustazah (women religious figures)…nobody makes a hoo-ha about this,” he said.
In the by-election, Mat Razi will be facing PAS candidate Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim, 56, and an Independent, Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary, 47.
The by-election is being held following the death of the area’s assemblyman Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar of the BN from liver cancer on Aug 20.
In the 13th general election last year, Nor Zahidi defeated Saharun Ibrahim from PKR and Izat Bukhary with a 1,736-vote majority. – BERNAMA
