Legendary BMX biker Dave Mirra has died of an apparent suicide.
The 41-year-old was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Mirra once held the record for the most X Games medals and had his own series of video games titled: Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX.
He also hosted MTV’s The Challenge from 2004 to 2005.
A picture of Mirra and his wife was posted on his Instagram on Thursday with the caption: “My Rock! Thank god.â€
Mirra was a brilliant BMX rider and won 14 gold medals at X Games, despite the fact that his career was nearly ended in 1993 after he was hit by a drunk driver.
But Mirra recovered and he won X Games honors at an astonishing rate between 1995 and 2008, his record of 24 medals over a career was only broken in 2013 by Bob Burnquist.
He was also a rally driver and competed in ironman and triathlons. “Ironman competitions are an entirely different ballgame. The level of competition is much higher, and there are way more athletes,†Mirra told Sports Illustrated.
