BMW Introduces Locally-Assembled BMW

CYBERJAYA (Bernama) — BMW Group recently introduced the new locally assembled BMW X6, the ninth model variant to be assembled in the country.

The X6 xDrive35i M Sport variant is one of the few available variants in the X6 family.

Among other BMW Malaysia’s complete knock down (CKD) models available in the market are 120i M Sport, 328i Luxury, 20d Sport, X1 sDrive20i, X3 xDrive20d and X5 xDrive35i.

BMW has been assembling their models in the country since the past 11 years in its assembly facilities at Kulim Hi-Tech Park, in Kulim, Kedah.


Speaking at the launching ceremony, Managing Director and CEO of BMW Group Malaysia, Alan Harris said that the X6 is the ninth model to join the portfolio of BMW Group Malaysia’s locally assembled vehicles.

“This is a part of BMW’s testament of its longstanding commitment and investment in Malaysia,” he said.

Alan added that BMW’s interest in Malaysian market is also proven with the expansion of the company’s headquarters here.

“Having CKD models assembled here in Malaysia is a part of our global strategy. Though we have yet to export this locally assembled X6, the potential is there, to cater for the South East Asia (SEA) region, as well as good prospects for the X6 and X4 (models) such as in Russia and Brazil,” he explained.

However, Alan admitted that the market is getting tougher and the devaluation of Ringgit makes it harder for the company to continue offering attractive retail price for customers.

Currently, the X6 xDrive35i M Sport retails at RM666,888.


The latest CKD carries an extrovert design which blends the versatile character of the BMW X models with the elegance of a Sports Activity Coupe (SAC).

Viewed from front, its shape is dominated by a wide kidney grille that extends all the way to the adaptive LED headlights and LED fog lights.

Being a vehicle with M Sport package, this SAC is also equipped with M Aerodynamic package and Adaptive M Suspension, with features such as 20-inches M double spoke light alloy wheels with mixed tyres.

The interior feature of this variant comes with special interior colours, exclusive trims and Dakota leather upholstery.

The cockpit features multifunctional instrument display with black-panel technology, of which horizontal lines extends from the panel to the doors giving the luxurious and comfortable ambiance in the cabin.

The M Sport package also comes with features like electrically adjustable sport seats, M leather steering wheel as well as sport gear selector lever.


The three-litre six-cylinder inline petrol engine which benefits from a full range of BMW EfficientDynamics features ensures greater performance and improved fuel efficiency for the vehicle.

With astounding output of 306hp (horse power) and 400Nm (newton meter) of peak torque, this locally assembled X6 is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds with a top speed of 240 km/h.

Its eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission for shift quality and fuel economy, with a record average fuel consumption reading of 8.6 litre per 100 km and CO2 emissions level of 200 gram per km.

For the wheels, intelligent xDrive equipped with all-wheel-drive system improves ride comfort and directional stability. The comfort level is raised further with Adaptive M Suspension package, which combines Dynamic Damper Control and pneumatic rear suspension with sporty tuning.


One of unique driving assistance system available in the locally assembled BMW X6 is the Surround View 360 which allows for all-round visibility when parking, manoeuvring and navigating in spaces.

Also, the Driving Assistant, a camera based system that combines Lane Departure Warning and Padestrian Warning to alert the driver to stay outside the limits of its lane, reducing risk of collision.

Meanwhile, BMW infotainment apps services provides the basis for smartphone integration including in-car access to Facebook, Twitter, Spotify and more.

The locally assembled X6 xDrive35i M Sport is available in alpine white, flamenco red, carbon black, and space grey, with a range of leather Dakota upholstery choice of colour including Black, Coral Red and Cognac.


In another development, the group has also completed the ground breaking ceremony of its new Product Distribution Centre (PDC) located at the Free Industrial Zone of the Senai International Airport in Johor.

This new state of the art logistics warehouse will be supporting BMW’s operation in over 22 countries in the region.

The new PDC will replace the current facility located within the Free Trade Zone of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Johor Baharu.

Speaking at the ceremony, Allan said that Malaysia continues to be a strategic hub and key growth market for the BMW Group in the SEA region.

The BMW Group Malaysia operates the activities that cover the wholesale of BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad vehicles in the country.–BERNAMA
