KUALA LUMPUR – The Batu Road Retailers Association (Barra) will organise a competition to create a monument for erection in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Jalan TAR) here.
Association president Datuk V. K. Liew said the public was invited to participate in the competition which would be held next month.
He said the monument was aimed at commemorating Malaysia’s first king, Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman Tuanku Muhammad, whom many people had mistakenly thought as (Malaysia’s first) prime minister (Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj).
“We have to educate our younger generation to appreciate our history. With this monument, it is hoped it will also become another attraction for foreign tourists to come to Jalan TAR to shop and visit,” he told a press conference here today.
This morning, Barra organised a day-long cleaning programme at Jalan TAR, together with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), traders and wholesalers at Jalan TAR, and some non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
On the competition, Liew said DBKL had approved and agreed in principle to Barra’s idea to organise the competition.
Barra was registered with the Registrar of Societies in June.
The association, representing wholesalers, dealers and retailers in Jalan TAR, was established to safeguard their interests. – BERNAMA
