KUALA LUMPUR – Bank Rakyat has been urged to be more agressive in marketing in order to improve its ranking in the domestic finance industry.

Making the call, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin said the bank is now ranked sixth in the finance sector and second in Islamic banking after Maybank.

“Bank Rakyat has reached a commendable level supported by its new chairman and competent board of directors,” he told Bernama here today.

The bank’s profit before tax and zakat in the first quarter ended Mar 31, 2015 rose 1.4 per cent to RM541.83 million from RM534.13 million in the same quarter last year.

Its gross income increased 8.7 per cent or RM123.16 million year-on-year to RM1.54 billion from RM1.41 billion in the corresponding quarter last year.

Earlier, Hamzah attended a meeting of about 1,400 Bank Rakyat staff in conjunction with his inaugural working visit to the bank’s headquarters on Jalan Rakyat here.

Hamzah said Bank Rakyat is actively encouraging government servants to use its credit card service.

“Those with substantial deposits may discuss their credit card interest with the bank,” he said.

The bank targeted 20,000 subscribers for its Platinum Card-i credit card by March this year. – BERNAMA
