PUTRAJAYA: Ambank Group chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim received the lifetime achievement award from the World Chinese Economic Summit (WCES) for his contributions in the banking and financial services industry.
Azman received the award together with Silverlake Axis Ltd group executive chairman Goh Peng Ooi from Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai on Friday as neither of them could attend the Summit held in London last November.
During the presentation ceremony at the Transport Ministry, WCES chairman Tan Sri Michael Yeoh congratulated both recipients, saying that the awards were conferred based on recommendations from the WCES international advisory council.
“Every year, the WCES confers lifetime achievement awards on about 10 to 12 distinguished personalities from around the world for their contributions and achievements in their career, as well as services to their community, country and industry,†said Yeoh.
Azman received the award in the category of Leadership in Banking and Finance Industry while Goh for Excellence in Information Technology.
Liow acknowledged Azman’s extensive involvement in developing the banking and finance industry not just in Malaysia, but the Asia Pacific region.
“His contributions to the growth and development of Islamic studies, particularly in Islamic finance are truly noteworthy,†he said.
Goh was acknowledged for Silverlake’s development of state-of-the-art universal banking solutions worldwide, from which the nation has benefited greatly.
Liow also spoke about how the last WCES placed special focus on China’s “One Belt, One Road†policy, which aims to enhance cooperation and connectivity between China and other countries in Asia and Europe.
“As a multi-lingual, multi-racial nation, Malaysia plays an important role as China’s gateway to Asean,†said Liow.
“Covering 65 countries and 4.4 billion people, the One Belt, One Road initiative will be one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken,†he added.
“Malaysia stands to reap significant benefits economically and socially, so we will continue to lend our support to China in seeing the One Belt, One Road initiative come to fruition,†he said.
