KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia booked their ticket to the semifinals of the Axiata Cup after being tied 2-2 with Singapore in their final preliminary round match at the Britama Arena in Jakarta, Wednesday.
Malaysia, the defending champions, finished in fourth place after collecting 17 points overall, from four wins, two defeats and a draw.
On Monday, Indonesia were the first to book their place in the last four when they collected 18 points overall from four wins and a draw.
In Wednesday’s matches, Indonesia defeated Thailand 3-1 while Asian All-Stars overcame the Philippines by the same margin.
Asian All-Stars and Thailand also made to the semis after collecting 19 points overall a piece.
The semifinals will be played at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras on Saturday and Sunday. The draw will be held on Friday.
In Wednesday’s match, Malaysia’s winning points came from the men’s singles and doubles.
Main singles Liew Daren was stretched to a rubber set but prevailed against Loh Kean Yew in 18-21, 21-15 and 21-19.
However, national women’s singles player Tee Jing Yi went down to Liang Xiaou Yu in 8-21 and 11-21 leaving the score tied at 1-1.
The men’s doubles pair of Tan Wee Keong-Tan Boon Heong were given a tough fight by Loh Kean Hean-Terry Hee Yong Kai but won the tie in 21-16 and 21-17 to put Malaysia ahead again.
But Malaysia missed victory when the mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Lai Pei Jing lost to Danny Bawa Chrisnanta-Tan Wei Han in 12-21 and 18-21. – Bernama
