Axiata Cup: Malaysia Loses To Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR – The national badminton squad were thrashed 0-4 by Indonesia in their third preliminary round match of the 2014 Axiata Cup Badminton Tournament at Bratama Arena in Jakarta, Saturday.

Indonesia’s domination in the match started in the men’s singles when Chong Wei Feng (pic) lost 19-21 and 11-21 to Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka.

The Indonesian squad collected their second point when their women’s singles player, Bellaetrix Manuputty mauled Tee Jing Yi 21-8 and 21-10.

Malaysia’s doubles pair of Tan Boon Heong and Tan Wee Kiong tamely went down to Muhammad Ahsan and Markis Kido in 21-17 and 21-13 and conceded the third point and match to the Indonesia.

Indonesia’s mixed doubles pair of Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir made it 4-0 by giving Chan Peng Soon and Lai Pei Jing a 21-13 and 21-16 drubbing, according to the championship website

In the latest standings, Indonesia are at the top of the table with 10 points followed by Thailand and Asian All-Stars with seven points each.

Malaysia are in fourth spot with six points.

All teams will have four more preliminary round matches to secure four berths to the semi-finals scheduled at the Cheras Badminton Stadium in Kuala Lumpur from Dec 6-7.

Malaysia will be facing Thailand in the fourth round match Sunday.

The teams taking part in the tournament are Malaysia as defending champions, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore and two invitation teams, Asia All-Stars and European All-Stars. – Bernama
