ALOR SETAR – Public awareness, especially among women, on sexual harassment in Kedah is low, said State Women’s Development, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Entrepreneur Development and Social Welfare Committee chairman, Datuk Suraya Yaacob.
She said this because many did not understand what sexual harassment was about and were afraid to report it to the authorities as they worried about society’s negative perception.
“There are still many who are unclear about sexual harassment as they feel it only involves physical disturbance such as touching, whereas speech which demeans women is also under the scope of sexual harassment,” she told reporters after launching a Merdeka Women’s Programme here today.
Suraya said women were still unclear about their rights, and there should be more exposure and information on sexual harassment to tell them about the laws which protect them. – BERNAMA
