PETALING JAYA: Hari Raya cannot come sooner for Australian showman Tomás Ford, whose song “Esok nak Raya” (it’s Raya tomorrow) that featured him attempting to cook rendang and ketupat has gone viral.
Ford’s Hari Raya themed cover of Black Eyed Peas hit “I Gotta Feeling” was sung in Malay and dedicated to Malaysians.
The music video has been viewed over 104,000 times and shared over 3,000 times since it was uploaded on Sunday.
Ford collaborated Malaysian electropop singer Sarah Zainal, or better known as Ze Rebelle, who wrote the Malay lyrics to the song.
The lyrics featured ketupat, duit raya and to “makan sampai pengsan” (eat till you faint).
Ford even tried his hand at cooking his own rendang and ketupat.
Unfortunately, his ketupat “tak jadi” (did not turn out), but that did not stop his cat from eating the remnants of his ketupat.
“I’m pretty sure my pronunciation is as good as my terrible cooking skills. Hope it gives you a laugh,” wrote Ford on his Facebook page.
Ford said that he is slowly starting to learn Malay, but is only at the “numbers and colours stage of language learning”, but said that he is “having so much fun”.
He also mentioned his plans to make a new show to bring to Malaysia, and expressed his hope to meet his Malaysian fans sometime this year.
This cover was not Ford’s first song in Malay. Three weeks ago, Ford released his song “Kerje je je je” which was a Malay cover of Rihanna’s song “Work”.
Ford also filmed a Ramadan greeting two weeks ago that featured him reading Malay off cue cards and thanking viewers for supporting his “Kerje je je je” video.
