KUALA LUMPUR – Almost a fortnight after Australian actress Eliza Szonert snatched her son from her former partner, she was arrested for kidnapping.
The 42-year-old former Neighbours star had shown up at a police station in Kuala Lumpur to be interviewed on Monday about the incident with the boy’s father, businessman Ashley Crick, on Dec 10.
Yesterday, City police chief Comm Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa said Szonert had been detained and will be remanded until Thursday.
Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Sharul Othman Mansor said Szonert was being investigated under Section 365 of the Penal Code for kidnapping or abducting with intent to secretly and wrongfully confine a person.
It is believed that she was detained after refusing to hand over her son or reveal his whereabouts to the police.
“We are also investigating her under Section 339 of the Penal Code for wrongfully restraining a person,†he said.
Szonert was stranded in Malaysia with her son after she took the boy from Crick in a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur.
She had alleged that Crick was in possession of her passport as well as that of her son’s and that he declined to release them to her.
Crick had since complained to the Malaysian police, who are investigating the incident where Szonert had allegedly used two burly men from a child recovery agency to undertake the snatch.
Crick, 43, last week told Australian media that he had filed a statement with the Malaysian police after his son was snatched as he was having breakfast at a restaurant. – MyNewsHub/The Star
