ALOR SETAR – The Kedah Department of Wildlife and National Parks has foiled an attempt to smuggle 97 pangolins valued at RM100,000 to Thailand.
The animals, found under the bonnet of two cars, were seized in a raid in Kampung Padang Buloh, Sungai Petani, at 5.15 am following surveillance, said its director, Mohd Hafid Rohani.
He said a 40-year-old man was detained and the two cars were seized.
The pangolins, a protected species, would be released into their natural habitat once the court issues the order, he said.
The law provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 and a maximum jail term of three years, or both, for people found guilty of smuggling pangolins. – BERNAMA
