MELAKA – The Ministry of Defence will ensure the welfare of the family of Captain Hasman Hussin of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), who died in the United States, is always looked after.

Its Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the ministry would look at what kind of assistance could be extended to his family to ease their burden.

“On behalf of the staff of the ministry and members of ATM, I record my sadness and tender my condolences to his family.

“I am personally saddened seeing his children who are still small, one only three years old while the twins were born only a few days before he went to the United States. So we have to ensure that their welfare and future will be looked after as best as possible,” he said.

He said this to reporters after after attending prayers for the late Captain Hasman at the As-Syuhada Mosque Terendak Camp here, today.

About 1,500 Malaysian Armed Forces officers and personnel joined the final prayers for the late Captain Hasman, headed by ATM Religious Corps director-general Major-General Datuk Kamarudin Mamat, after his remains arrived at 4.30 pm.

Also present were Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron and Chief of Army Gen Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor.

Hishammuddin said he would leave it to the ATM and Army chief whether to promote the late Captain Hasman in honouring and appreciating his services.

Meanwhile, he hoped military personnel would continue to be positive especially when a fellow soldier was hit by catastrophe.

“The advantage which our personnel and Defence Ministry staff have is that, even in trying times, support is available whether in terms of material or moral to whoever is going through difficulties. I believe this is of value and meaning which cannot be measured with money,” he said.

Captain Hasman, 33, who was undergoing a course at Fort Leonard Wood since Oct 1 was reported missing on Dec 26 when the vehicle he was in was swept away by floodwaters in Missouri, which also killed four of his colleagues.

His remains were buried at the Muslim Cemetery Kampung Solok Air Batu in Masjid Tanah, Alor Gajah, Melaka at 7 pm today. – BERNAMA
