TAWAU – About 300 residents of Kampung Titingan, Jalan Tawau Lama, were left with only the clothes on their back in a fire which destroyed 60 houses at block 6, 7 and 8 early today.
Tawau Fire and Rescue Station head, Sharudy Delamin, said the station received a distress call on the fire at 12.55 am, following which 31 firemen in three engines were sent, arriving at the location five minutes later.
“When the firemen arrived, a few houses were on fire and the fire was at its peak, but was controlled at 2.28 am using water from the river and the sea,” he said.
He said a resident, Sabon Ola, 82, was rushed to hospital after he fainted and died due to suffocation.
Shaharuddin said they were assisted by firemen from the Kunak station, police, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd, People’s Volunteer Corps, Health Department and the Civil Defence Force in the fire-fighting operation. – BERNAMA
