MELAKA – Arch-rivals Malaysia and Thailand will face off in an exciting men’s final of the Istaf Sepaktakraw Super Series Malaysia 2015 at the Melaka International Trade Centre, tomorrow, after beating their respective semifinal opponents today.
In the first semifinal, host Malaysia who were strongly backed by about 3,000 local fans, were in superb form to sweep aside Incheon Asian Games silver medallist South Korea 21-11, 21-12.
The win was also sweet revenge for Malaysia who lost to South Korea in the Asian Games and endured heavy criticism from all stake holders and fans.
In today’s match, South Korea fielded the same team that won the silver medal in Incheon with Park Hyeon-geun as ‘Tekong’, Im An-soo as the ‘killer’ but the South Korean trio could not withstand the onslaught from the Malaysia trio led by Malaysian skipper Farhan Adam.
Farhan who played as ‘Feeder’ was instrumental in defusing the powerful services of the South Korean ‘Tekong’ and fed Hanafiah Dollah who played as ‘killer’ to smash down the points.
In the other semifinal, Asian Games gold medallist and first Super Series winners Thailand lived up to their top billing by beating Singapore 21-13, 21-13 in straight sets to book their berth in the final.
In the first Istaf Super Series held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar last year, Thailand edged Malaysia 2-1 (20-22, 21-18, 21-23). – BERNAMA
