PUTRAJAYA – Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the Animal Welfare Act 2015 has been activated since July 1.
“Under this Act, the owners are responsible for ensuring that the animals are kept in a suitable environment, fed a suitable diet, allowed to show natural behaviour, placed together or separated and protected from pain, suffering, injury or illness.
“The Act aims to reject the ‘animal is an animal’ culture, but to ensure that the owners regard the animals as part of the family who must be given good treatment,” he said when announcing the activation of the Act at his ministry today.
Under the Act, the owners found guilty face a fine ranging from RM10,000 to RM100,000 or jail sentence of up to three years.
Shabery also announced the establishment of the Animal Welfare Board comprising 11 members from related agencies and higher education institutions. – BERNAMA
