Ampang Park, Where Sweet Memories Were Made

in Latest

KUALA LUMPUR – Meeting his life partner while working at the Ampang Park shopping centre is the sweetest memory for a security supervisor of the country’s oldest mall.

Recalling the days of his youth, Ahmad Suparia Seedovardi, 57, who has been working at the mall for more than 30 years, never thought the shopping centre where he earned his living would also give him the chance of meeting his future wife.

“I met my wife who worked here as a clerk in the same unit around 1992, and working on shifts made socialising with the outside world fairly limited but it turned out that God’s plan was perfect,” said Ahmad Suparia who would clock his final shift on Sunday (Dec 31) before the building will be closed from Jan 1, 2018.

The Ampang Park shopping centre, which began operations in 1973, will be demolished to make way for the construction of the Ampang Park Mass Rapid Transit station.

A check by Bernama today found the shopping mall still being patronised by people who perhaps wanted to see it for the last time besides taking advantage of the huge promotion of various items before the building is vacated.

Ahmad Suparia, who is from Perak, also expressed his sadness as he considered the mall as his second home and he even planned to continue serving at the mall until retirement.

Meanwhile, one of the traders, Mohamad Sharil, 38, described the closure of Ampang Park as a bitter episode for him as he grew up with his family money changer business at this 44-year-old shopping complex.

“It is a sad feeling and if I have my way, I don’t want to leave this place as the other traders and longtime customers are like one big family,” he said.

For visitor Noor Hisham Che Din, 53, he did not want to miss the opportunity to bring his family back to the mall to relive his childhood memories before it ‘disappears’.

“There used to be a theme park here similar to the one in Berjaya Times Square now. I used to spend time playing with friends here and before it is demolished I want to show my children the place that created 1,001 memories for me,” he said. – BERNAMA
