KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry wants all types of schools to be placed under its purview, which will allow certification of fitness for buildings and facilities.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan said it was compulsory for every school under the ministry to receive safety approval from the fire and rescue department as well as occupancy permit.
Kamalanathan said the proposal to streamline schools in the country had been forwarded to the cabinet.
“Some schools are not registered with the ministry. Some of them are under state religious departments.
“We have been pushing for all schools to be parked under the ministry. and will continue to do so until it is approved. This is, among others, for the safety of every school in the country.
“We will be working with all relevant parties to ensure all safety requirements in schools are adhered to,” Kamalanathan told reporters when met at Pusat Tahfiz Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah where more than 20 students were killed after the tahfiz school caught on fire early morning today.
Kalamanathan urge local authorities to carry out regular inspections at all educational institutions to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
Fire and Rescue Department deputy director-general Datuk Soiman Jahid had said the Pusat Tahfiz Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah’s management had submitted its building plan recently but had yet to receive approval. -NST
