CAMERON HIGHLANDS – The government plans to eradicate illegal crop cultivation in Cameron Highlands despite attempts to open new farms by illegal immigrants.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri G. Palanivel said the authorities will continue with the operation and will destroy the illegal farms.
“Illegal farming has become a big problem and those behind it don’t seem to fear the authorities,” he told reporters after presenting aid totalling RM129,000 to 80 mudslide victims in Ringlet, here today.
Five people were killed and 90 people from 28 families were displaced during a mudslide in Kampung Raja, here on Nov 5, 2014.
Newspaper reports recently said that there were attempts to open new illegal farms in Cameron Highlands despite continued enforcement action by the authorities.
The National Security Council (MKN) recently found illegal farms of about of 500 acres on slopes using the ‘barn’ farming method (minus structures) to avoid detection by authorities.
On another note, Palanivel said he will discuss with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) on plans to deepen rivers and implement flood mitigation projects.
Further discussion on the allocation needed will be held with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. – BERNAMA
