All Malaysian Students In Kumamoto, Japan, Reported Safe

KUALA LUMPUR – All the 18 Malaysian students in three universities in the Kumamoto prefecture in Japan that was hit by an earthquake last Thursday are reported safe, said Wisma Putra.

In a statement issued here tonight, Wisma Putra said the Malaysian Embassy in Japan had contacted all the students concerned after the incident and found that they were all safe.

The students are studying at the Kumamoto University, National College of Technology Kumamoto and Ariake National College of Technology.

“All the students are reported to be in the evacuation zone set by the Japanese authority in the city,” it said.

It said the embassy was also tracing the status of other Malaysians in the area.

“Wisma Putra and the Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo are monitoring the situation and are closely in contact with the Japanese authorities for the latest information and development,” it said.

According to Wisma Putra, the Japanese government had announced that its authorities had taken appropriate measures in addressing the situation, including providing aid to the victims involved.

Last Thursday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale hit south west of Japan at 9.26 pm, claiming nine lives and more than 700 people injured. – BERNAMA
