SEPANG – Long-haul low-fare airline, AirAsia X, is facilitating free flights to Nepal for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and humanitarian agencies to aid relief efforts in the recently earthquake-hit country.
Its Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Kamarudin Meranun said that the airline would be facilitating free flights from today until May 10, based on seat availability, for accredited NGOs, aid and humanitarian agencies.
“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the earthquake in Nepal and we pledge to do what we can to help alleviate grief and distress experienced by the victims, and pray for their safety and well-being,” he said in a statement here today.
He said all NGOs and humanitarian agencies can send their requests to AirAsia Foundation at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Further information for flights coordination will be provided after evaluation of the request.
The earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, hit Nepal in the area between Kathmandu and the town of Pokhara at 2.56pm (Malaysian time) on Saturday. Several aftershocks also took place.
The earthquake has been described as the worst in Nepal’s history for the past 81 years. – BERNAMA
