EMERGING CP130 title contender, Ahmad Afif Amran says he will not let his Teluk Intan victory get to his head amid suggestions he stands a chance to fight for the CP130 title at the end of the season ahead of Round Eight of the PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship in Kangar, Perlis next weekend.
The CP130 rookie gave Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi (Givi Honda Yuzy Racing) a run for his money when he secured his second win for the season after Terengganu (Round Three), capitalizing on the latter’s error in the final lap.
Although he admits the victory helped boost his confidence, Afif believes it is still too soon to think about the championship prospects given the 22-point gap separating him and Zaqhwan (120 points) in the overall standings.
“We are really motivated right now. Teluk Intan was a good race and it will keep us smiling for a while but at the same time we need to stay grounded because we cannot forget this is my first year in the CP130. From now on the remaining races will be very difficult with every rider looking to secure a good position in the standings before the season wraps up,†said Afif.
“At the moment I am putting the championship hopes aside. My goal is to win or finish on the podium in the remaining three races. If by the time we hit the season finale and stand a mathematical chance to claim the title, I will go for it but for now it is wiser to take a race-by-race approach,†he added.
The PETRONAS Yamaha CKJ rider also said he was extremely pleased with how the year turn out so far, “Everything has been going exceptionally well. We bagged two race wins and exceeded a few expectations. I am enjoying the intense rivalry in the premiere category and I hope we can keep moving forward like this in the future.”
