PETALING JAYA – The final list of players for the AFF Suzuki Cup later this month will only be announced after the Harimau Malaya’s (national squad) friendly match against Vietnam this Sunday, said coach Dollah Salleh.
Dollah said he did not want to release the names early because he was confident winger R. Gopinathan and defender Aidil Zafuan Abd Radzak, who are on the injured list, would be available for the prestigious regional tournament.
“We definitely need the services of Gopi and Aidil but if they can’t make it, I will have to drop them. That is why I am not making any decisions yet,” he told reporters before heading to the airport to leave for Vietnam with the players from Wisma FAM here Friday.
He also said that his was taking in his stride criticisms levelled at the Harimau Malaya following their dismal performance in international friendlies in preparing for the Suzuki Cup in Singapore from Nov 23-29.
In their latest friendly against a Syria Under-23 side at the Shah Alam Stadium on Wednesday, they lost 0-3.
Malaysia are in Group B in the Suzuki Cup and open their campaign against Myanmar on Nov 23 followed by Thailand on Nov 26 at the Jalan Besar Stadium and against the hosts on Nov 29 at the National Stadium, Singapore Sports Hub.
Vietnam host Group B with the other teams in the group being the Philippines, Indonesia and Laos.
The top two teams in each group qualify for the semifinals which will be played on a home and away basis. So too the final. – Bernama
