PEKAN – A young couple met a fiery death when the car they were travelling in burst into flames as it hit an excursion bus at Km 16 Jalan Pekan-Nenasi near Pekan early today.
The victims were identified as Mohd Safiuddin Mohd Sezali, 26, a soldier from Kampung Panchor Merah, Permaisuri Terengganu and his wife Nor Farina Rosli, 26, a nurse from Kampung Edang, Melor Kelantan.
Pekan district police chief Supt Yahaya Othman said in the 4.45 am accident, the couple’s Proton Persona went out of control before colliding into a bus which was heading towards Kuala Trengganu with 30 passengers in it.
“Both vehicles caught fire when they collided and the couple were trapped in their burning car,” he told reporters here today.
The bus passengers including the bus driver escaped unhurt.
He said two fire engines from Pekan and Nenasi Fire and Rescue Department rushed to the scene at about 5 am but the couple could not be saved.
“The bodies were sent to Pekan Hospital and the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said. – BERNAMA
