KUALA LUMPUR – Gaza-based Hamas chief, Ismail Haniyeh, urged all Palestinian factions to strive to set up a unified government and hold a free and fair elections, stressing that by working together – Hamas, Fatah and all other Palestinian factions –  can get rid of the Israeli brutal occupation.

He emphasised that the Palestinian people themselves should take the lead in facilitating the nation’s affairs and guarding the homeland, reiterating that Jerusalem was Hamas’ prime concern and the axis of the movement’s struggle.

“We should thwart all attempts promoting an alternative homeland and we will never accept any alternative of Palestine,” he said in his maiden speech as head of Hamas, which was made available to Bernama by the Palestinian Cultural Organisation Malaysia (PCOM).

Haniyeh emphasised that the Palestinian people have resisted the localisation of refugees, aggressiveness, siege and against Israeli attempts at judaisation of Jerusalem.

He stressed on Hamas’ determination to stop  Israel’s illegal actions including suppression, siege, land confiscation and settlement, which violated  the international law.

As for the West Bank, he said that Hamas worked in two parallel tracks namely supporting the steadfastness of the Palestinian people in confronting the enemy’s plans and resistance to force the enemy to pay a heavy price for its occupation.

Haniyeh also referred to the issue on refugees, which he described as a political matter, pointing out that the “right of return is a sacred right.” He urged the United Nations to carry out its duties on this matter until the refugees return to their homeland.

He thanked the Arab countries – Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt –  Turkey and Iran, which supported the Palestinian cause as well as providing humanitarian and financial aid.

He noted the recent visit of a Hamas delegation to Egypt, which he said would have a positive impact on the lives of Palestinians in Gaza.

Haniyeh also thanked all nations,  which supported the Palestinian struggle, and sought to formulate relationships with several components of the international community and organisations on  the Palestinian cause. – BERNAMA
