PUTRAJAYA: A Perodua Myvi worth RM50,000 awaits the winner of the Name the Giant Panda Cub Contest which runs from Nov 17 to Dec 17, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
He said two motorcycles – a Demak Rino and Demak DJ 90 – were also being offered as consolation prizes.
According to Wan Junaidi the ministry had so far received 960 entries for the competition, held in conjunction with the birth of a giant baby panda at Zoo Negara on Aug 18.
“The proposed name should be interesting and meaningful, as well as not infringe on China’s sensitivities,” he said in a special press conference for the Name the Giant Panda Cub Contest 2015 here, today.
The Malaysian government received a pair of giant pandas, Xing Xing and Liang Liang, from the Chinese government on May 21 last year to mark the 40th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations.
Liang Liang gave birth to a female cub on Aug 18 and the giant cub was unveiled to visitors of Zoo Negara on Nov 17 after being quarantined for more than three months.
Wan Junaidi said a shortlist of names would be screened further before the final list was presented to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for approval of the cabinet and the Chinese government.
