MELAKA – Eighty-seven former soldiers and those still serving in the Army who were injured fighting the communist insurgency or during security exercise today received a contribution of RM500 each from the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).
Third Division commander, Major General Datuk Sheikh Mokhsin Sheikh Hassan said the contribution was in recognition of their sacrifices in ensuring peace in the country.
One of the recipients, retired Sergeant Abu Akop, 61, said he was grateful to MAF for always looking after the plight and welfare of ex-servicemen.
Abu, who had served from 1973, lost his left leg to a booby trap while serving in Perak.
Another recipient, Dawam Ahmad, 65, a corporal with the 12th battalion, Royal Malay Regiment, was injured in his right leg while on duty in Narathiwat, Thailand in 1978.
“Such a contribution helps to lighten our burden, especially in getting medical treatment and in coping with the rising cost of living,” he said. – BERNAMA
