Here are the eight with the most impressive academic backgrounds:

1. Najwa Mahiaddin


The soulful singer may have links to the Malaysian political scene (she is the daughter of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin), but this talented lady studied Electrical Engineering in one of the top universities in Melbourne,Australia. Coerced by the loneliness she felt while being a student there, the now-29-year-old started recording tracks and posting them on her MySpace page, which Malique from Too Phat took notice, and the rest was history.

Her passion in music and performing prompted hero t pursue the Berklee transfer programme at the International College Of Music, Kuala Lumpur. before completing her degree in contemporary writing and production at the Berklee College Of Music in Boston.

2. Lisa Surihani


Malaysia’s sweetheart Lisa Surihani proves that you can have it all: look, impeccable manners, luxury–and a superior education to boot.

The mother-to-be holds a Degree in Law from Help University College and Aberystwyth University in Wales,United Kingdom, but has never practised.

3. Yuna


She may be the most successful local artiste in the international scene, but Yuna proves that education can be a stepping stone to make it with the big players in showbiz (a collaboration with David Foster and Incubus’ Mike Eizinger, anyone?). The Terukir Di Bintang  (Etched In The Stars) singer/songwriter has a Degree in Law from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam.

4. Daphne Iking


Not many know this, but popular TV personality Daphne Iking,now known as her Muslim name Dahlia, is a proud holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcasting (Film, TV and Radio) and Masters in Communication. She obtained both of her impressive academic achievements from  Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang.

5. Ahmad Idham

In 2011, accalaimed film director Ahmad Idham enrolled in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) to pursue a doctorate (PhD) in film studies.

Idham already had a Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam. His PhD studies are said to focus on the local film industry– its challenges, obstacles and methods to overcome the complications.

6. Sudirman Hj Arshad


The late Sudirman is remembered not only as a great performer, but also for his stellar academic achievements. Rejecting a med school scholarship, the multifaceted singer pursued law instead, and received his Degree in Law from University of Malaya (UM) before practising as a lawyer for a short period of time.

7. Jason Lo


The Kuching-born rocker of Irish-Chinese parentage Lo is an accountancy graduate from Hull University, and even possess a Master’s degree in Finance from the Webster Graduate School in London.

8. Azhar Sulaiman


The 90s heartthrob has a Diploma in Architecture from UiTM Shah Alam in 1994, before pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in the same course at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne,United Kingdom in 1997.

The geeky actor (which reminded us so much of Matthew Broderick) then took an advanced programme in Architecture at the University of Kingston Upon Thames, London in 1999.
