7 Kitchen Hacks That Will Make Your Life Much Easier

Ever have someone point out a hack or trick in the kitchen that is so simple and obvious you can’t believe you hadn’t been doing it since you moved out on your own? That’s how we feel about most of these game changers, and we’re so excited to share them with you. Some of them have changed everything for us—or at least breakfast.

1. Microwave Poached Egg

We’ve made scrambled eggs in the microwave, but this trick is next level. Pour a half cup of water into a large (8 oz.) coffee mug. Crack an egg gently into the water—don’t break the yolk!—and cover with a saucer or small plate. Microwave for about a minute—times vary depending on the microwave—but if you listen closely, you’ll start to hear popping noises. That means the egg is done! Take the mug out of the microwave (careful, it will be super hot!) and gently remove the egg with a large spoon. Enjoy!

2. Frozen Fruit as a Practical Drink Garnish

Add flavor and a festive touch to wine, champagne, and sparkling water with this healthy hack! Either freeze your favorite seasonal fruit or buy a bag of frozen berries to use as an ice alternative. We love frozen grapes in white wine—they won’t dilute and ruin the flavor—and frozen berries in champagne and sparkling water or tonic for a festive holiday chiller. You can make this garnish even prettier by spearing a mix of fruit with cocktail picks (think alternating raspberries and blackberries) before freezing.

3. Ginger Peeling Hack

We love ginger! Whether peeled and served fresh with homemade sushi, stirred into carrot ginger soup, or tossed into a stir-fry, the tangy-sweet zip of fresh ginger root imparts nuanced flavours to many meals. But you don’t need to spend $15 on a ginger peeler, and you can put that knife down  and pick up a spoon. Yes, it’s that easy—just scrape the skin off ginger root with the edge of a spoon.

4. Fresh Bananas Hack

Breakfast and snacks are all about prep around here, and slicing up bananas in advance for pancakes or topping yogurt with makes so much sense. But, ugh, they turn brown in what seems like minutes. Here’s the hack: Spritz sliced bananas with fresh lemon, orange, lime, or apple juice to stop discoloring for hours. Do this right before bed, and your sliced fruit will be ready to go in the morning.

5. Banana Peel Hacks

After you’ve peeled your bananas, don’t throw away the peels! Banana peels pack a lot of hacks into something you’re chucking in the trash. Finding perfectly ripe avocados at the grocery store can be tricky, but you can ripen them on your timeline by sticking them in a paper bag with a banana peel. Throw them in the bag in the morning and come home to guacamole-ready avocados. Another great hack: Keep your next roast moist by putting a banana peel in the roast pan. Seriously, it works.

6. Smartest Swap: Greek Yoghurt

Obsessed with Greek yoghurt for all things, obviously. But the tart and sweet superfood isn’t just a great breakfast; it’s a perfect swap for sour cream when you’re making a chicken salad bowl or as swap for whipped cream (try it with fruit on pancakes). So filling and healthy!

7. Broken Glass Hack

The only thing worse than breaking a  drinking glass is finding bits of glass a week later (hopefully not stuck in your heel, ouch!) in every corner of the kitchen.
