KOTA BAHARU – Sixty Kelantan Islamic Foundation (YIK)-sponsored students on transit in Turkey enroute to Egypt are safe, said Kelantan Human Development, Education and Higher Education Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan.
He said the students, aged 18 and 19, arrived in Turkey last Thursday on board a Turkish Airline.
“The students are accompanied by a few teachers and they are reported to be safe. They will be brought our of Turkey anytime to continue their journey to Egypt,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.
He said the students would be pursuing studies in various fields, such as medicine and Islamic Studies, at several universities in Egypt, including Al-Azhar University and University of Alexandria.
According to international media reports, the armed forces had fully seized power in the country, but President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said early today the coup attempt had failed, urging people to protect democracy. – BERNAMA
