KUALA TERENGGANU – Six shops and seven houses in the Shahbandar Square, here, were razed in a fire that broke out since 9.40pm last night.
Fire Assistant Superintendent Che Shaari Abdullah said that the fire was under control now, however, work was still ongoing to put out the fire completely.
He said more than 52 firefighters from Marang, Jalan Kota and Kuala Terengganu fire stations, were working hard to stop the fire from spreading.
“The fire was believed to have started from one of the shops and we are still carrying out the investigation … the fire spread fast as some of the houses were built of wood and were close to each other. The situation was worsened by the strong wind as the place was located near the beach.”
According to Che Shaari, the team had been trying to put out the fire for the past two hours and their efforts were hindered by low water pressure in the area and as of midnight, they managed to put out 70 per cent.
Meanwhile, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman, who visited the scene, expressed his shock with the incident but grateful that there were no casualties and extended his sympathy to the victims. – BERNAMA
