GEORGE TOWN: Search and rescue operation will continue today for a 39-year-old man who fell from the second Penang bridge.
Mohd Shukri Saad from Lahar Yooi in Tasek Gelugor had stopped his motorcycle at the 11th kilometre on the island-bound side of the bridge before the incident at about 8.30am yesterday.
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Penang district II director Kapt Rozali Mohd Said said the agency received a distress call at 8.45am.
“On arriving, we found a motocycle, a pair of slippers, a helmet and a mobile phone at the scene.
“A search and rescue operation was launched immediately with the help of all the relevant authorities,” he said at the MMEA Penang office in Jalan Sri Bahari here yesterday.
Kapt Rozali said the search covered a 1km radius from the location where the motorcycle was found.
“The operation will continue for the next few days. We urge fishermen and the public to inform us if they find the body,” he added.
Since 2014, Kapt Rozali said, 18 people had drowned after falling from the two Penang bridges.
“According to our records, only one person survived,” he said.
