BAGAN DATUK – About 5,000 people of various races and religions attended the Perak state-level Deepavali Open House, here today.
The event, which was graced by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah and Raja Permaisuri Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, was held at the Dewan Sanmarka Orang India, Hutan Melintang.
The Royal couple who arrived at about 10 am was greeted by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and his wife Datin Seri Saripah Zulkifli.
Others who attended the event included the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa; Raja Di Hilir Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzulkarnain Shah and Raja Puan Muda Perak, Tunku Soraya Sultan Abdul Halim.
At the event, the Sultan of Perak beat the Nadaswaram Drum as a symbol to mark the launching of the ceremony.
Various traditional dishes of the Indian community such as idli, tosei and capati were served to the guests who started filling up the hall as early as 8 am and formed a long queue to shake the hand of the Sultan of Perak.
The event was enlivened by various Indian cultural performances.
Earlier in his speech, Perak MIC chairman Datuk V.Elango said various assistance and facilities had been given by the Perak state government to help the Indian community in the state. – BERNAMA
