PUTRAJAYA : Barisan Nasional expects multi-cornered contests for the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar parliamentary by-elections on June 18.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) said the Umno machinery has been directed to prepare to ‘fight’ in the event of such contests.
Ahmad Zahid, who is Umno vice-president, said although he believe that the Opposition parties are still trying to work out the details, he would not be a surprise of “a crowded affair” for both seats.
“We welcome a multi-cornered contest in both constituencies eventhough we acknowledge that it will be a tough fight for Barisan,” he said on Friday.
The Election Commission has declared June 5 for nomination and June 18 as polling day for the two by-elections.
Dr Ahmad Zahid also announced that Perak Mentri Besar and state Barisan chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Kadir as the election director for Kuala Kangsar and Selangor Umno chief Datuk Seri Noh Omar to head the team in Sungai Besar.
He would be overseeing both by elections.
The seats fell vacant following the deaths of Datuk Noriah Kasnon, MP for Sungai Besar, and Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, the lawmaker for Kuala Kangsar, in a helicopter crash in Sarawak on May 5.
