Teen Remanded Over Facebook Comment Against Johor Royalty

KULAI: The magistrate’s court here has ordered a 19-year-old unemployed teenager to be remanded for four days in connection with an insulting comment against the Johor royal institution posted on Facebook.

The suspect was believed to have made the insulting comment on football issues.

Police received a police report on the case on Feb 10.

The suspect had surrendered himself at the Kulai police district headquarters on Wednesday.

The teen, who is from Pasir Mas Kelantan, is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or up to a year’s jail or both, upon conviction.

Kulai magistrate Ahmad Farid Ahmad Kamal ordered the suspect to be remanded for four days between April 21 and 24.

Initial investigations showed that the status uploaded by a Facebook user with the name of Muhd Israf had the intention of causing hurt and disturbance to others, especially to the Johor royal institution.
