KUALA LUMPUR: Eight people were injured when the roof of a restaurant collapsed at a shopping mall here.

The roof is believed to have collapsed following a gas explosion.

A source from the City Fire and Rescue Department said it had received information on the incident at 10.21am, Tuesday and dispatched a fire engine and eight personnel from the Pantai Fire Station to the scene.

They arrived moments later and found that the ceiling of a restaurant on the ground floor of Mid Valley Megamall had collapsed.

Eight people suffered minor injuries and have been sent to a nearby hospital.

City Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail is at the scene now to assess the situation.

He is expected to give a press conference shortly.

Mid Valley Megamall has confirmed that several maintenance staff were injured following minor explosions at the complex.

There were no fatalities nor injuries to members of the public, the mall’s management said in a statement.

It added that the incident at two food outlets at the complex occurred while re-instatement work was being carried out on the mall’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) system.

“There were minor injuries to our maintenance staff, LPG contractor and tenant staff. Medical treatment is already being given. There were no fatalities, neither were there any injuries to the public.

“We are working with the relevant authorities and have shut all the gas systems in Mid Valley Megamall until further notice,” it said.

It also confirmed that the mall would remain open to visitors.
